Tips on Talking to Your Teen
When asked about the most influential factor in teen sexual decision making, teens reported that their parents were the single most influential factor. Adults wrongly assumed that their children’s friends had the greatest influence.
What Do I Talk About?
It’s important to discuss the biological facts, but your teens also need to understand how sex can affect all areas of their lives, and how you feel about it.
• Talk about what your teens see and hear about sex.
• Tell your teens what you expect of them, and what you believe.
• Help your teens understand that having sex is a big responsibility and can have serious emotional and physical consequences (HIV, STDs, unwanted pregnancy, broken heart).
• Discuss the benefits of waiting.
• Talk about love, dating and relationships.
• Teach the importance of respect – both to themselves and others.
How Do I Keep Conversations From Being Awkward?
• Talk on a regular basis, and LISTEN to your teens.
• Encourage your teens to ask questions, they probably have lots of them.
• Be honest and direct.
• Avoid judging your teens. Remember, this is a conversation, not a lecture.
• Stay cool and take hold of your emotions – your teen may tell you things you’re not ready to hear.
• Affirm and address your teen’s feelings, and try to sympathize.
• Don’t worry if you don’t know all of the answers. If you can send the message that no subject, including sex, is forbidden in your home, you will help your teens feel more comfortable talking to you.
